To create his iconic sculpture Last Trumpet (1995), Terry Adkins assembled severed bells of trombones and sousaphones along with segments of cast brass to create four eighteen-foot-long horns he called “Akrhaphones.” The following year, the artist activated this sculpture in a performance of the same name. Adkins continued to display and activate the Akrhaphones throughout his life in commemorative multimedia performances that he called “recitals.” This program will feature Akrhaphone players Vincent Chancey, Joseph Daley, Dick Griffin, and Marshall Sealy in conversation with Kamau Amu Patton. They will discuss previous performances of Last Trumpet and their relationships to the Lone Wolf Recital Corps, a rotating collective of multidisciplinary artists and musicians founded by Adkins in 1986. Documentation from a 2013 performance of Last Trumpet at Performa 13 will be screened as a part of the conversation courtesy of Salon 94, Performa, and the Estate of Terry Adkins. It will be accompanied by a 2017 performance of this recital that took place at the Museum of Modern Art as a part of the exhibition Projects 107: Lone Wolf Recital Corps, the first exhibition to reunite the Corps after Adkins’s death.
