This symposium was held at the Pulitzer in conjunction with the exhibition Hiroshi Sugimoto: Photographs of Joe. Many facets of Sugimoto’s art were discussed, including his early installations; his relation to Japanese traditions; the relationship between Sugimoto’s photography and Richard Serra’s sculpture; and Sugimoto as architect. Among the participants were museum curators, university professionals, collectors of Sugimoto’s work, Sugimoto’s studio manager, and six graduate students from Harvard University. The Pulitzer partnered with these students to compose blog entries detailing the topics that were discussed and to create an archive of the symposium’s proceedings.
