A Way, Away (Listen While I Say)—a project by artists Amanda Williams and Andres L. Hernandez—is a part of PXSTL, a design-build commission collaboratively organized by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Taking the form of five interventions over the next several months, A Way, Away (Listen While I Say) draws attention to the life cycle of a building.
The first phase began last week by marking the building at 3721 Washington Boulevard, which has been slated for demolition. Painted gold by people with a relationship to the site, this transmutation shrouds the building as it passes to a future phase. The golden bricks signify the preciousness and value of both material and community, connecting them to those invisible power structures that drive demolition.
