Sugimoto Symposium
September 30, 2006
On September 30 – October 1, 2006, a symposium was held at the Pulitzer in conjunction with the exhibition Hiroshi Sugimoto: Photographs of "Joe." Many facets of Sugimoto’s art were discussed, including his early installations, his relation to Japanese tradition, Sugimoto and the concept of time, the relationship of Sugimoto’s photography to Richard Serra’s art, and Sugimoto as architect. Approximately 25 people participated, among them museum curators, university professionals, collectors of Sugimoto’s work, Sugimoto’s studio manager, and six graduate students from Harvard University. The Pulitzer partnered with these students to create blog entries detailing the topics discussed and to create an archive of the symposium proceedings.
