Peter Henderson
A versatile and inquisitive pianist, Peter Henderson is active as a performer in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings.
Since fall 2005, Henderson has served as Assistant Professor of Music at Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri. He performs frequently as an ensemble keyboardist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and, over the past four seasons, he has often given Pre-Concert Perspectives from the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra's Powell Hall stage prior to subscription concerts. He has coached chamber music performance techniques at the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop each summer since 2001, and was an orchestral and chamber keyboardist with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony during its 2004 and 2006 seasons. Henderson holds the degree Doctor of Music in Piano Performance, Literature, and Pedagogy from Indiana University-Bloomington (having studied piano there with Dr. Karen Shaw); before attending IU, Henderson studied piano at the University of Idaho-Moscow with Dr. Jay Mauchley.
Henderson’s ongoing musical partnerships include the St. Louis-based Ilex Piano Trio, featuring St. Louis Symphony Orchestra musicians Kristin Ahlstrom, violinist (his lovely wife), and Anne Fagerburg, cellist. A former full-time member of the Hot Springs, Virginia-based Garth Newel Piano Quartet (http://www.garthnewel.org), Henderson participated in the Quartet’s inaugural recording of the G-Minor Quartets of Mozart and Brahms. In 2004, Henderson accompanied SLSO Concertmaster David Halen on Mr. Halen's first solo CD "Salut D'Amour," published by AAM Recordings (http://www.aamrecordings.com). While thoroughly dedicated to chamber-music playing, Henderson is also an advocate of new music, having given several premieres of solo-piano works during the past several years. He and his wife live in St. Louis's south city with their willful but thoroughly charming dog Zack.
