New Music Circle

Music Organization

New Music Circle is one of the nation's longest-running organizations for the promotion of contemporary music, multimedia, and performance; since their formation in St. Louis in 1959, New Music Circle has introduced local audiences to adventurous and provocative composers, performers, and artists working with sound. In 2014, New Music Circle invited International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) to select a series of pieces in response to the Pulitzer's exhibition Art of Its Own Making. With flautist and collaborative artist Claire Chase—a 2012 MacArthur Foundation Fellow—ICE performed a set of challenging works designed to reframe existing notions of live music and its relation to the space in which it is performed.
